Classes have not been scheduled for 2024. What is shown below are last year's offerings. Fun and affordable classes offered at this year's Gem Show feature high quality materials to make beautiful and authentic items to take home. Classes are small, with 5 to 7 students. A skilled instructor and a trained assistant ensure high quality, personal instruction. Classes are held in three venues. Please arrive a few minutes early.

Gem Show classes are attractively priced to introduce artists to new skills and projects.

Cost includes the material fee. Everything is included; in some cases you may bring your own item if you prefer.

Who can participate? Ages 15 through Adult. An elevator to the second floor of the Fairgrounds is available for persons with disabilities.

When can I enroll? Enrollment has begun. You will receive an email reminder a week before class begins.

Cancellation Policy. If you cancel 72 hours before the class starts, you may request a refund for the $54 tuition (minus a $5 processing fee). However the material fee portion of your tuition is not refundable, as supplies are purchased in advance. Alternatively, you may transfer your enrollment to a friend.
Scholarships are available for Gem Show Classes. If your living expenses are high and wages are low, you may qualify to receive a scholarship that covers 2/3 of the tuition cost. For details go to the Class Scholarship page.

LAPIDARY CLASSES THURSDAY - SUNDAY
Make a Cabochon
In this 3 hour class you will slab, trim and polish rough stone into cabochons ready to set into jewelry, and learn the safe operation of lapidary equipment. Slabs are provided but feel free to bring a slab of your own. Choose one session, offered Thu, Fri, Sat or Sun. Silver Ring with Stone In this 4 hour class, you will learn to accurately measure and solder a ring, then cut, assemble and solder a bezel setting to hold an oversize stone. Leather Bead Healing Wrap

Silver Ring with Overlay This 4-hour class will teach you how to solder two or more layers of metal to create landscapes, images, and other designs. In this 4 hour beginner's class, you will learn to use a jeweler's saw, metal stamps, rivet hammer, and other tools to produce a handsome tab-set pendant featuring a natural stone. Stones and interesting fossils are provided, but you can bring a favorite cabochon if you prefer. This type of setting does not require soldering. Leather necklace included.

Wire Wrap Pendant
In this 4 hour class you will learn to twist, curl and weave copper wire to elegantly wrap and secure a beautiful polished stone and complete a pendant. Stones are provided, but you can bring a favorite cabochon, if you prefer. A good beginner stone will have a teardrop shape. This class is offered twice. Choose either the morning or afternoon session. Silver Bracelet with Stone In this 4 hour class you will construct a beautiful silver bracelet with a stone, including designing, sawing, measuring, soldering, bezel making and stone setting techniques. Dapped &Textured Earrings
In this 4-hour class you will complete two pairs of earrings by combining a variety of metal forming techniques, such as paddling and dapping, with a variety of texturing techniques, such as using a rolling mill, stamps, jeweler's saw, or texture hammer. You will also learn how to make ear wires using an allergy-free sterling silver alloy. SUNDAY JULY 9 METAL, WIRE AND BEAD CLASSES
Hand Engraved Silver Pendant
In this 3.5-hour class you will learn how to transfer a pattern and precisely engrave a sterling silver pendant. We will use hand tools but the instructor will give you a sneak preview of pulse engraving as well, a two-day class in advanced engraving techniques we will teach this fall. This is the first time metal engraving has been offered by the Club or in the Four Corners area, thanks to a generous grant from the City of Durango to obtain the essential tools. Mala Bead Necklace
In this 3.5 hour class you will make a 108 bead Mala necklace using an assortment of natural stone and wood beads and a special tying technique to protect the strand from breakage. You will also learn about the spiritual practice of this necklace. Beads are provided, but you may bring a strand you have purchased if you prefer. Riveted Mixed Metal Pendant
In this 3.5-hour class you will pierce a design in one layer of metal, stack your design on a background metal, drill holes, insert spacers, and hammer rivets into place. Patina choices will create colorful contrast between your foreground and background metals. Sterling silver chain necklace is included.
