- PRESCHOOL AND PRIMARY. This program introduces students to Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic rocks, as well as Fossils, Metals and Meteors. Students will sort, identify, and conduct hands-on experiments to better understand rock processes. Each student will stamp and form a piece of copper to make a necklace to take home using jeweler's hammers and found objects. We request one adult per 4 students (teachers and parents) to actively assist with hands on activities, including metal shaping. Adults are admitted free. The cost of the class is $3 per student and includes the cost of materials.
- 4th THROUGH 12th GRADES. This program introduces to students to concepts of geologic time, plate tectonics, and mountain forming and eroding processes of our beautiful SW Colorado region. In doing so, they will better understand formations such as the San Luis Valley, Silverton Caldera, marine fossils found atop Molas Pass, petrified wood fields of northern New Mexico, and our region's oil, gas, and mineral heritages. Students will complete the lesson by using jewelers' tools to form and texture a piece of sterling silver to make a pendant to take home. We request one adult per 8 students (teachers and parents) to actively assist with hands on activities, including metal shaping. The cost of the class is $4 per student and includes the cost of materials.
