Shop Steward
These volunteers are the backbone of the organization. They open the building for Shop Hours, and have basic knowledge of shop equipment, stone cutting and soldering techniques. They are personable and helpful and strive to make the Club a welcoming place for members. Shop Stewards earn credits for shop fees. Shop Steward training is available on an ongoing basis.
Equipment Repair
These volunteers help keep the Club's lapidary equipment running smoothly through regular maintenance, changing belts and saws, and troubleshooting. These volunteers have a basic understanding of simple motors, and can communicate with others how to safely and responsibly operate equipment. Cleaning saw boxes earns these volunteers credits for shop fees.
Gem Show
The Club's largest fundraiser is its annual Four Corners Gem and Mineral Show, held the weekend after the Fourth of July every summer at La Plata County Fairgrounds. With 60 dealers arriving from all over the U.S. and Mexico, it is an exciting event for Club members and the general public. There are many interesting volunteer opportunites you may browse here.
Marketing
These volunteers help connect the Club to the region its serves - by announcing classes and special events and explaining to the public what the Club offers this community and region. Marketing volunteers are knowledgeable about online and print promotions and may have graphic arts, website, video, writing, proofreading and related skills.
Facility Management
The Club's shop, located at 2351 North Main, Durango, is now over 100 years old. It requires regular upkeep and repairs. If you are handy with tools or a paint brush, or have experience in construction, this may be the volunteer job for you!
Board Positions
Every year new members are elected to the Board of Directors. These volunteers are knowledgeable about nonprofit operations and financial management. They strive to meet the community's needs and are tactful, creative problem-solvers. This dedicated group holds a vision for the Club's future and develops a course of action.
Demonstrations and Presentations
People who are knowledgeable about local geology or special lapidary and metalsmith techniques provide free demonstrations or presentations to the general public. These teaching events help our community better understand what the Club has to offer. Some class instructors use these events to demonstrate a technique students will learn if they enroll in their classes. Demonstrations and presentations are approved at the monthly business meeting.
