FIELD TRIP - Fire and Ice: A Geological Tour of Wolf Creek Pass Saturday, July 20, 2024 The 2024 field trip season will kick off with a geological tour across the eastern margin of the Colorado Plateau and into the guts of the San Juan Volcanic Field at Wolf Creek Pass. Have you ever wondered: How did sediments deposited at sea level end up at 7000 feet? Are volcanoes going to erupt again in the San Juans? Is climate change real? Why do geologists lick rocks? ……and, most importantly, is Geology a “Real Science?” Geologist Bob Cuffney will answer these and more questions on this fun and informative field trip. The stretch of Highway 160 from Pagosa Springs to Wolf Creek Pass crosses upper Cretaceous shallow-marine and coastal-plain sedimentary rocks of the eastern edge of the iconic Colorado Plateau, then passes through nearly 5000 vertical feet of the San Juan Volcanic Field, one of the largest, most complex, and best studied volcanic fields in the world. You will learn about seas coming and going during the age of dinosaurs; mountains being built, then washed away; Super Volcanoes erupting with such massive force and volume that they make Mt. Saint Helens look like 4th of July fireworks; and rivers of ice putting the final touches on sculpting the spectacular South San Juan Mountains. We will make several stops along Highway 160, ending at Lobo Overlook on the Continental Divide to look at rock exposures and discuss what they tell us. There will also be some light hiking involved. The tour will begin at the Junction Restaurant parking lot at the east end of Pagosa Springs (just before the Hwy 160/84 intersection) at 9:00 am. We will car pool from there. The trip will be limited to five vehicles (20 people?) due to parking restrictions along the highway. The round trip will probably take about 4-6 hours, but could be longer depending on attendee’s interest. For more information, please check the EVENTS calendar for July 20.
