Take a Gem Show Class!
Fun and affordable classes offered at this year's Gem Show feature high quality materials to make beautiful and authentic items to take home. Classes enroll up to 6 students. A skilled instructor and a trained assistant ensure high quality, personal instruction. 

Classes are held in three venues. Please arrive a few minutes early. 
  • La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 North Main, Durango, Colorado, on the second floor of the Exhibit Hall, north end of the hallway
  • La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 North Main, Durango, Colorado, on the second floor of the Exhibit Hall, south end of the hallway
  • Four Corners Gem and Mineral Club, a block from the Fairgrounds at 2351 N. Main, the turquoise building in Brookside Park.​ ​

Gem Show classes are attractively priced to introduce artists to new skills and projects.
Cost includes the material fee. Everything is included; in some cases you may bring your own item if you prefer. Credit card processing is securely managed by Paypal. 
Who can participate? Ages 14 through Adult. An elevator to the second floor of the Fairgrounds is available for persons with disabilities.  ​
​When can I enroll? Enrollment has begun. Some subjects fill quickly. You will receive an email reminder a week before the class begins 
Cancelation Policy. If you cancel 72 hours before the class starts, you may request a refund for the $52 tuition (minus a $5 processing fee). However the material fee portion of your tuition is not refundable, as supplies are purchased in advance. Alternatively, you may transfer your enrollment to a friend.

Ammonite Pendant
In this 3 hour beginner's class, you will learn to use a jeweler's saw, metal stamps, rivet hammer, and other tools to produce a handsome prong-set pendant featuring a natural ammonite fossil.

Make a Cabochon
In this 2.5 hour class you will slab, trim and polish rough stone into cabochons ready to set into jewelry, and learn the safe operation of lapidary equipment. Slabs are provided but feel free to bring a slab of your own. Sign up for a Friday, Saturday or Sunday session.

Silver Pendant with Stone
In this 3 hour class you will construct a silver pendant with a stone, including designing, sawing, measuring, soldering, bail making and stone setting techniques.  A stone is provided but you can bring a small cabochon, if you prefer.

Pierced Metal Riveted Pendant
In this 3-hour class you will learn to use the jeweler's saw to pierce out an interesting design. Then you will hammer rivets to attach the design to a background plate, and finish with a high contrast patina.

Keum boo Earrings
In this 3 hour class you will work with two precious metals to practice an ancient metalsmith technique that fuses pure gold to fine silver through the application of heat and pressure. We will have a practice run with copper and silver to get the hang of it before you dive into the pricey metals! You will make two pairs of earrings with ear wires.

Painted Agate Slabs
In this 3-hour class you will learn figure or landscape painting using a slab of natural agate or other interesting stone as your canvas. Slabs are provided but you can bring a favorite slab, if you prefer.

Silver Bracelet with Stone
This 3-hour class you will complete a beautiful silver bracelet with a stone. Skills include sawing, measuring, soldering, mandrel forming, and stone setting techniques. A stone is provided but you can bring a small cabochon, if you prefer.

Spinner and Layered Rings
In this 3 hour class, you will learn to accurately measure and solder a ring. Then add a second layer that either spins or is soldered in place.  This is a great  introduction to ring measurement, design and soldering. Sign up for the morning or afternoon session.

Wire Wrap Pendant
In this 3 hour class you will learn to twist, curl and weave copper wire to elegantly wrap and secure a beautiful polished stone and complete a pendant. Enroll in either the morning or afternoon session. Stones are provided, but you can bring a favorite cabochon, if you prefer. A good beginner stone will have a teardrop shape.

Mala Bead Necklace
In this 3 hour class you will make a 108 bead Mala necklace using an assortment of natural polished stone and wood beads. You will learn an essential tying technique that protects the strand from breakage (the same technique is used with pearls). You will also learn about the spiritual practice of this necklace. Beads are provided, but you may bring a strand you have purchased if you prefer.
